When you send a torque converter for refurbishment, you want to know what’s involved, how long it will take, and exactly how much it will cost. The best way to provide that clarity is to show the process step by step. Once you see what goes into the work, the price becomes straightforward.

The Importance of a Thorough Visual Check

Every job starts with a visual inspection. It may seem simple, but it’s a key step. The engineer checks the converter neck for distortion or scoring, inspects the splines for any uneven wear, and looks for signs of stress around the base. These early checks guide the rest of the process and help avoid unnecessary delays or returns later on. Getting it right from the start protects both you and your customer.

What Happens When We Open the Converter

The converter is machined open so our engineers can assess the internal components clearly. They check the turbine, the stator and one-way clutch, the lock-up clutch plate, the internal fins and splines. The old transmission fluid is also reviewed. Clean fluid generally means normal wear. Burnt or darkened oil can point to heat exposure, and visible debris suggests internal wear or wider transmission issues. Once open, the engineer works from direct evidence rather than assumptions.

Cleaning and Repair Work

The converter then goes through a full cleaning process. Residue and debris can hide damage or wear, so every surface must be properly cleaned before any repair begins. After cleaning, the engineer carries out repairs where needed. Depending on the unit, this may include fitting a new stator assembly, replacing the lock-up clutch plate, or correcting spline or fin damage. The repair work is accurate and repeatable. The cost remains stable because it is based on the converter’s original design, not its condition.

Welding, Pressure Testing and Balancing

When repairs are finished, the converter is welded shut. This weld needs to hold under both pressure and rotation, so it is structural as well as functional. Once sealed, the converter is pressure tested to ensure the weld holds and the unit is leak-free. Any converter that does not pass is reworked until it meets standard. From there, the unit is balanced to eliminate vibration. Even minor imbalance can lead to noise or premature wear, so proper balancing protects the gearbox and driveline.

Final Checks and Return

The converter is cleaned, checked again and packaged for return. Trade customers expect a clean, professional finish. When your team opens the box, you should see a well-presented, ready-to-fit component. Presentation reflects the quality of the work done.

Turnaround Time: Fast, Structured and Reliable

Refurbishment takes between 48 and 72 hours from collection to return. This covers inspection, machining, cleaning, repair, testing, balancing and final prep. Every stage is completed in sequence. This gives a dependable turnaround without rushing or cutting corners.

Simple, Transparent Pricing Structure

We do not base prices on the visible condition of a converter when it arrives. The cost is set by the manufacturer, the design, and the internal specification. Whether the unit comes from a Mini, a Nissan Note, a Land Rover Discovery or an Audi Q7, the price is fixed within that design category. This makes quoting easy and avoids uncertainty.

Audi Q7 and Other Common Trade Units

We regularly refurbish converters from high-spec vehicles such as the Audi Q7. These units often include more advanced internal components, but the pricing stays fixed to their known design. There is no price shift based on the vehicle brand or perceived complexity. This lets you quote your customer without hesitation.

Trade Support Across the UK, Including London

We are not based in London, but we work with trade customers across the capital through our collection and delivery service. We also support garages and gearbox specialists in Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Liverpool. We have location-specific pages to help with search visibility and logistics. Wherever your workshop is based, we can support you with the same consistent service.

Getting a Quick Quote

Call us with the vehicle and transmission details and we will give you a confirmed quote straight away. If you prefer it in writing, we can send it by email. Collection and delivery can be arranged for anywhere in the UK and Europe. Once we know what unit you have, the price will not change. That makes quoting straightforward.

Why This Process Works

Torque converter refurbishment is a repeatable process. It works because of structure and method, not improvisation. When every stage is carried out properly and pricing stays based on design, the outcome is reliable. Your customer receives a fully refurbished unit. You receive it on time. And the job stays off your ramp once it is done.
