How Balancing & Pressure Testing Add Life to Rebuilt Converters

A good torque converter rebuild should last. It should go back on the vehicle, run smooth, and not come back a few months later with a rattle or leak. That’s what every gearbox specialist wants — a job done right the first time.
At All Automatic, we’ve been rebuilding torque converters for more than 40 years. In that time, we’ve learnt what really makes the difference between a reliable converter that keeps going and one that fails early. It comes down to two key steps: balancing and pressure testing.
These checks are simple in idea, but they do the heavy lifting when it comes to delivering a long-lasting, high-performance converter.
Why These Steps Matter
Torque converters take a pounding. They spin at high speed, generate heat, and deal with extreme hydraulic pressure. If even one part is slightly off, it can cause:
Vibration and noise through the gearbox
Early bearing or seal wear
Slippage or overheating
Fluid leaks and pressure loss
Skipping the balancing or pressure test might save a few minutes, but it can cost you a comeback — or worse, a failed unit in the field. That’s why every converter we rebuild goes through both.
Balancing: Keeping It Running Smooth
Converter balancing is about making sure the unit spins straight and true. If it wobbles — even by a fraction — that movement gets passed into the gearbox. It puts strain on bearings, welds and seals, and over time, something will give.
Here’s how we handle it:
We start with the parts. Each turbine, impeller, and stator is checked and balanced before assembly.
We finish with the whole unit. Once built, it goes on a balancing rig, spun at speed, and any imbalance is corrected until it runs true.
When a rebuilt torque converter is properly balanced, it runs smoother, quieter, and cooler. That means less wear and longer life for the whole transmission system.
Pressure Testing: Making Sure It Holds
Once balanced, the next essential step is pressure testing - making sure the converter holds fluid and pressure without leaks under load.
We pressurise the unit using air or fluid and check for any drop or leakage. This simple but crucial test catches problems like:
Tiny weld cracks
Damaged or poorly seated seals
Structural weak spots
If it doesn’t pass, we don’t ship it. We strip it down, fix the issue, and retest it. Only when a unit passes 100% do we send it out. That’s how we guarantee a pressure-tight, leak-free converter.
Why You Need Both
Balancing stops vibration. Pressure testing stops leaks.
Do one without the other, and you’re only halfway there. Combined, they deliver a durable, trouble-free torque converter that holds up under real driving conditions - reducing comebacks and giving customers peace of mind.
Process | What It Does | Why It Matters |
Balancing | Stops vibration and wobble | Protects bearings, welds, and seals from wear |
Pressure Testing | Checks for leaks and structural flaws | Ensures converter holds pressure during operation |
At All Automatic, we carry out both on every rebuild — no shortcuts, no guesswork.

Clear test reports with every unit
Friendly, straightforward support from people who know their stuff
We don’t do gimmicks. Just solid, honest engineering.
Working With You, Not Just Supplying You
We see trade customers as partners, not just buyers. If you run a gearbox repair shop or automatic transmission workshop, you need suppliers who deliver on time, stand by their work, and pick up the phone when needed.
That’s how we run things at All Automatic. We make sure you’ve got the parts, advice, and technical support to keep jobs moving. When one of our converters goes into a gearbox, we want you to know it’s good to go.
Tested, Proven, and Built to Last
Every converter we rebuild follows the same trusted process:
Balanced
Pressure tested
Checked again
Only then do we pack and ship it. That’s how we’ve built a name for quality rebuilt torque converters — steady, reliable work that keeps workshops coming back.
We’re not chasing volume. We’re focused on quality that speaks for itself.
Across the UK, Trusted by the Trade
From Cardiff to Glasgow, Birmingham to London, we supply rebuilt torque converters across the UK. We keep a wide range of units in stock and handle custom rebuilds too.
Our goal is simple: to make your life easier. When you order from All Automatic, you know the converter’s been built right, balanced right, and tested to hold pressure from day one.
Let’s Work Together
If you’re a gearbox specialist or workshop owner who wants dependable, UK-tested torque converters, rebuilt, balanced and pressure-tested by engineers who care. We’d be glad to work with you.
We’ve built our business on trust, consistency, and honest engineering.
